Encaustic painting is an ancient art technique that utilizes molten beeswax and damar resin, often mixed with colored pigments. In this collection, encaustic medium is applied to wood panel or paper. The pieces reference the natural world through both materials and process: multiple layers of beeswax and oil are slowly built up and fused with fire, and organic materials such as birch bark, horse hair, leaves or quills are laminated, embedded or “sewn” onto the substrate.
